At Google I/O one of official is Android Instant Apps. This means that you’ll run an app without installing it or downloading it.
Behind that simple use case are slightly additional complicated tweaks that developers needs to build to their apps for them to support this. This due to an app need to be modular to achieve this.
When, for example, someone sends you a link to a product listed on a web site, you’ll get to view this retailer’s app – even if you don’t already have it download to your phone or tablet. Android Instant app can load only the relevant modular component of the app on your device, in background, which means there will not be plenty of waiting to do while that happens.
And if you wish to actually install it, you’ll get a button for that too – simply tap on that and also the app are on your device.
Android Instant Apps can be supported on OS versions going back all the way back to jelly egg, so this functionality can be accessible to over a billion users. The new feature will be out for shoppers to play with “later this year”, Google says. In the meantime, developers can start operating on making their apps compatible.
Google has partnered small number companies to “help refine the experience”, including BuzzFeed, B&H Photo, Medium, Hotel Tonight, Zumper, and Disney.
